Rediscovering Your Why in Business: How to Fall Back in Love with What You Do

11 November 2024

If you’re anything like me, you might have a love-hate relationship with your car’s satnav. It’s consistently unreliable, the voice is far from pleasant, yet somehow, I rely on it. Gone are the days of maps strewn across the passenger seat and second-guessing directions – and for someone who often gets lost even on local errands, this is a true lifesaver. This routine of “where we’re starting, where we want to go, and how we’ll get there” is foundational, isn’t it? Not just on the road, but in everything we do. And rediscovering your why in business is the perfect example. It’s this same sense of direction, purpose, and destination that we rely on when we start a business. Yet, somewhere along the way, it’s easy to lose sight of that.

Remembering Your “Why” When Starting a Business

Most of us start our business with a clear purpose. The “why” at the core of our vision is often what drives us, fuels our excitement, and gets us through those early, challenging stages. When you’re driven by passion, the ideas flow, and something tangible begins to take shape. This is the spark that feels like it could create something meaningful – something that could make a real difference to others.

Rediscovering your why in business means reconnecting with those early emotions. Often, that spark fades under the noise of everyday demands and the relentless online world that insists your only goal should be “making more money.” Six figures, seven figures, multi-seven figures – the pressure to constantly grow and scale can be deafening.

But while business growth is important, there’s more to success than just hitting revenue milestones. If this pressure causes you to forget why you began in the first place, the journey can quickly feel empty.

Why Rediscovering Your Why in Business Matters

When I started my business, I knew what I wanted: to create a better life for myself and my family. My why wasn’t just about making arbitrary sums of money – it was about building a sustainable, fulfilling lifestyle. But it’s easy to get lost in the online noise and forget that. Many people have now wrapped their entire identity and self-worth into their business, making success feel like a never-ending race to climb an even higher mountain.

If you’re feeling this way, now is the time to reconnect. Rediscovering your why in business can transform your work from a constant grind back into something you genuinely enjoy. When you’re clear on why you’re doing what you do, your journey becomes fulfilling again, not just another demand on your time.

Falling Back in Love with Your Business

Think of this as taking your business on a “date night.” Remember the excitement you had when you first started, and reconnect with what truly excites you about your business. Instead of chasing someone else’s version of success, consider how you can create a path that feels right for you. This process of rediscovering your why in business allows you to turn down the volume on outside pressures and focus on what makes you happy.

Success doesn’t need to look the same for everyone. You can make money in a way that aligns with your values and makes a positive impact, without subscribing to someone else’s vision of success. In fact, the most sustainable business strategies are often those that are most personal and aligned with your core values.
