Why I Wrote a Business Book

14 October 2024

For a long time, I resisted the idea of writing a book. Despite being encouraged by others, I kept thinking, “Why write another business book when so many already exist?” My hesitation stemmed from a sense of redundancy; I didn’t want to add to the noise unless I had something genuinely different to offer.

But over the course of two years, as I continued reading countless business books (I’m an avid reader, averaging two to three books a week), I noticed a few key gaps. And that’s when I realised I had something important to contribute.

Why I Finally Decided to Write

My decision to write a book wasn’t born out of a desire to share what I already knew but rather from recognising what was missing from the business books I was reading. I saw three consistent issues:

Overemphasis on Cryptocurrency and Dropshipping
Many books discussing passive income seemed to focus almost exclusively on complex areas like cryptocurrency or dropshipping. But what about the everyday person who wants to create passive income through more accessible means, like courses or memberships? I wanted to write for “Betty from Barnsley” — someone who might not have a business background but has valuable knowledge they could monetise.

Too Much Mindset, Not Enough Strategy
While mindset is important, most business books I came across were disproportionately focused on it. Readers were often told why passive income was a great idea but left hanging on the how. My strength has always been breaking down complex ideas into actionable steps, and I wanted to create a book that did just that — providing a clear, step-by-step guide to building a passive or semi-passive income stream.

Lack of Female Perspectives
There’s a noticeable gender imbalance in the world of business books, especially those focusing on passive income. The majority of these books were written by men, often with a “bro marketing” vibe. I wanted to write from a different perspective, one that resonates with women who are balancing family, time, and financial goals. My audience isn’t looking for Lamborghinis; they want time freedom and opportunities to create memories with loved ones.

The Vision Behind the Book

I wanted my book to be a practical, step-by-step guide to creating a passive income business, written in my usual chatty style to make it as easy to follow as possible. But I also wanted it to be relatable and inspiring. That’s why I’ve woven in personal stories — not just to entertain, but to show how life experiences, including the tough ones, can shape your journey to success.

For instance, I share about growing up in poverty, being bullied, and navigating life’s curveballs, all of which have influenced how I run my business today. I also talk openly about the online bullying I’ve experienced and how I’ve dealt with it. My goal was to offer readers both practical advice and a source of support during their own challenges.

Adding a Personal Touch

To keep things interesting, I’ve included more than just strategies. Each chapter starts with a personal story, and I’ve also featured case studies of people who’ve used the methods I teach to build successful businesses. These stories bring the strategies to life and show that the steps I lay out really work.

I’ve also added original quotes throughout the book, many of which were written by my husband, Sam, who’s a copywriter. It was a fun, collaborative part of the process, and it’s one of the unique touches that sets the book apart.

The Structure of the Book

The book is broken down into nine chapters, each covering a key area of building a passive income business:

Introducing Passive Income and the Cash System

Passive and Semi-Passive Income Explained

Why Mindset Matters

Online Memberships and Courses

Growing an Engaged Audience Online

Becoming Visible and How to Deal with That

Systems That Will Make Your Life Easier

How to Successfully Launch Programs

The Only Way is Ethics

Each chapter blends strategy with personal insights, ensuring that readers not only learn what to do but also feel inspired and supported as they implement the steps.

Final Thoughts

Writing this book was a way for me to fill a gap in the market. It’s not just another business book — it’s a practical, no-nonsense guide for people who want to create passive income while maintaining integrity and balance in their lives. I hope that through my stories and strategies, readers will not only gain the tools they need but also the belief that they too can achieve financial freedom on their own terms.
